Terror Island – Not a Serial! (Ad 1 of 7)

Last week we looked at full color advertising inserts that were published in the magic magazine M-U-M to accompany the release of The Grim Game.

This week, I thought we look at the full color advertising inserts that were published in Motion Picture News to accompany the release of Terror Island in April 1920.

Each Day this week (Sunday to Saturday), I will post a different color advertisement for Terror Island – Not a Serial!

  1. Cool. You know, this is the art Hollywood Heritage is using to promote my talk and screening, and I was wondering if this was a mock-up because I’d never seen it before. I thought they might have added the color. But this is real, eh? Sweet.

Do you have the originals of these?

    • It is not a mock up and definitely appeared in Motion Picture News along with the others I am going to share this week. Unfortunately I don’t have originals of these; I do have original color inserts for The Grim Game along with original brochures and newspaper ads. As you know, I also have copies of all of the stills for The Grim Game and Terror Island.

  2. I understand from Kevin Connolly that the natives in Terror Island were played by African American jazz musicians from Los Angeles who I guess were looking for a little extra money playing extras. I believe that the islands in the Pacific were occupied mostly by Polynesians and not Africans. Perhaps the natives here were meant to represent the Aboriginal people?

    • Possibly. All we know is that the Island in the movie is somewhere in the South Seas; footage for the Island was actually shot on Catalina Island in November of 1919.
